Tepapayeca

The road from Izúcar leads to Cuautla which is the old entrance of Tepapayeca the literal meaning of which is" rather good and calm". Tepapayeca is located 76 kilometers from the city of Puebla. With family gardens of fruit trees and old handmade walls of perfectly round stones, this quiet village has an archaeological site called Tlapanalá and a small monastery built in the sixteenth century.

The archeological zone in Tlapanalá is only beginning to be uncovered, for now there are only two basements as several others remain under existing houses of the village. Two bodies were above what is now known to be a prehistoric temple that was demolished in the sixteenth century. The stones were used in the construction of new buildings, such as the monastery rebuilt at the end of the century.

Near the archaeological site the monastery was formed by the Church of Candelaria, the only part of the convent that remains is the beautiful and flowery courtyard of the cloister, with its arcades of half points supported by columns and capitals of smooth simple spirals. In the same way as the former convent Izúcar, the Tepapayeca was the work of Dominican friars, which is why the archery faculty holds the shield of that order.
